The Nuclear Energy Regulatory Agency (BAPETEN) held an audience with the management of PT ThorCon Power Indonesia (PT TPI) and the signing of the Extension of the Safety, Security, and Safeguard (3S) Consultation at Building A BAPETEN on Monday, May 27, 2024.
This audience was attended by Sugeng Sumbarjo as Acting Chairman of BAPETEN, Haendra Subekti as Deputy Chairman for Nuclear Safety Assessment, Zainal Arifin as Deputy Chairman for Licensing and Inspection, and several High-Ranking Pratama Leaders. Meanwhile, from PT TPI, it was attended by Mark McGough as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of ThorCon Group, Dave C. Devanney as former CEO of ThorCon Group, Kun Chen as Chief Nuclear Officer of PT TPI, Bob S. Efendi as Director of Operations of PT TPI, and his staff.
The audience discussed several important points, namely, the introduction of BAPETEN to the new CEO of ThorCon Group, discussion related to the results of the FGD proposal to the Indonesian government that had been submitted by ThorCon Group, and the signing of the 2024 3S Consultation Report (second phase).
The audience began with a speech from Sugeng Sumbarjo, who said that clean energy sources are a great opportunity so that the consultation and licensing stages can be encouraged progressively. Zainal also added that "we always open a discussion space related to licensing for renewable energy.".
Then Chen said that the submission process would be completed, but there were still some things that needed to be fixed. "It should also be noted that the submission time via Single Sign On (SSO) has a very strict deadline for the permit and licensing process. For this reason, consultation activities need to be optimized to complete it immediately," concluded Zainal.
Dave expressed his gratitude to BAPETEN for being willing to hold this audience. He hopes that ThorCon Group will not only carry out business activities but can also continue to collaborate and contribute to renewable energy. "We want to be a pioneer in Indonesia for clean renewable energy with low cost and risk," he added.
The event continued with a Q&A discussion about the obstacles faced in licensing at BAPETEN and steps that can be taken to be more efficient, especially in efforts to accelerate licensing and spread wider benefits to the community and the environment, which was then closed with the signing of the 2024 3S Consultation Report.
